4449 PORTLAND TO BEND, OREGON - 23/24 MARCH 2002SVS Film's production - a 25 minute video of the Southern Pacific 4-8-4 #4449 in American Freedom Train colours with a special train from Portland (Oregon) to Bend in March 2002. The video is available as a DVD-R, and features pure steam sounds and captions - no annoying commentary or music! As well as high quality digital video, a collection of sixteen digitised colour slides of the AFT 4449 rounds off the programme, again with 4449 sound track. The train consist includes the 380 (US) ton ex Southern Pacific 4-8-4 #4449, its second water tender, tool car, generator car, plus a further twelve steamlined cars including four domes and the round-end 'Daylight' painted observation car 'James J. Gilmore' - a trailing weight of about 1,200 tons without any diesel helpers! Video sequences include lineside views of the train leaving Portland through the city's industrial outskirts, locations along the north bank of the Columbia River, a fantastic sound with the massive engine at full throttle on the 1.5% Gateway grade, night switching and a brief cab tour at Bend, photo runby at Madras, downgrade in the Deschutes Canyon near Sherar's Bridge and the train regaining the mainline near Wishram on the shores of the Columbia River.
